Get to know PEFC
BULETIN TEKSTIL.COM/ Jakarta – PEFC is a bottom-up international program constructed from national initiatives at the national level. Members of Indonesia’s IFCC (Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation) created this program.
With rayon derived from sustainable forests as the primary raw material, PEFC is among the global leaders in the sustainable textile and fashion industries.
A certification system that enables stakeholders to evaluate their progress toward attaining sustainable forest management is necessary for sustainable forest management. Such a system must be developed with a spirit of cooperation and unity without coercion, in compliance with local, national, and international norms and conditions. We founded the Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation (IFCC), a forestry certification cooperative, because of this upbeat attitude.
IFCC was established on September 9, 2011, with the goal of advancing SFM via the execution of the PEFC scheme, which encompasses chain of custody, forest products, certification for forest management, and forest products processing sectors, among other things.
A.The Most Prominent Forest Certification System is PEFC
- Uses third-party certification to certify your sustainable forest management practices.
- Establish a system for tracking and confirming that materials obtained from forests are sourced from PEFC-certified, sustainably managed forests.
Sustainable forest management is a global concept, but its application is local. For this reason, we collaborate with regional groups to voluntarily enhance national forestry through a forest certification program.
B.Textile and Garment Sector and PEFC
- Provides awareness in the fashion industry about the advantages of sustainable forest management that complies with strict social, economic, and environmental requirements.
- If there is a knowledge gap, fill it with information and encouragement about ethical wood-based fiber sourcing.
- Assits brand owners in removing dubious wood suppliers from their supply networks.
- Supports brand owners in achieving their more ambitious sustainability goals than just certification.
- Collaborates with NGOs, textile associations, suppliers, and brands
- Provides textile groups with our SFM and forestry industry experience to help them achieve common objectives.
C. Third-Party Verification Validates Forest Certification
-. Certification of sustainable forest management
- A robust forest ecosystem, with carbon and biodiversity
- Employees in good health (e.g., safety, training)
- Thriving societies (e.g., rights of indigenous peoples)
- Thriving local economy in terms of jobs and income
-.Certification of chain of custody
- Assurance of provenance from forests with sustainable management
- Adherence to the law
- Independently verified traceability from the forest to the customer Addresses occupational health, safety, and regulatory concerns
Motivating Factors: What Makes Certification Vital for the Entire Fashion Sector?
- By using approved components, the possibility of consuming fiber from unreliable sources is removed.
- The value of transparency is demonstrated by SFM standards proof, traceability tools, and a chain of custody that connects final clothing to forestry.
- Notable volumes at play: We interact with brands whose collections, on average, contain 5–10% wood-based fibers.
- Strong sustainability goals are set by brands, and retailers and stakeholders are putting more and more pressure on them to adopt SFM-certified fiber policies, especially through initiatives like Fashion Pact.
- Verification of ingredients through credible sources for companies, retailers, customers, and non-governmental organizations.
- increased awareness of unsupported claims and greenwashing.
Possibilities: For the Fashion Sector
The production of MMCF has increased during the past 30 years and is predicted to do so in the years to come. Producing MMCF has a lot of potential in terms of sustainability.
- Rising interest in organic, sustainable, and biodegradable materials.
- The industry’s emphasis on ethical norms, biodiversity, and climate change is in line with the advantages of PEFC accreditation.
- The certification of major fiber producers is based on an increased and steady supply of certified materials.
The Advantages of PEFC Certification
- Traceability solutions Minimize risks by excluding fibre that may contribute to deforestation and forest degradation
- Meet legality requirements
- Access largest source of certified supply for supply chain flexibility
- Implement an internal management system that can be integratedwith existing ISO system
- Support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
- Helps support local forests, local communities, local workers, local economy
- Meet public and private
