Collaborating with Famous Designers, Push Garut Leather MSME Products to Go International

BULETIN TEKSTIL.COM/ Jakarta – The Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (MenKopUKM) Teten Masduki in collaboration with the Government of Garut Regency, West Java, is committed to encouraging leather MSME products that are widely occupied by people in the Garut area to develop and become global.

In Garut, we are constructing a shared factory that will provide contemporary tools for leather shoe and bag makers that are constantly being developed. So that MSMEs that create leather crafts can do tolling at a lower cost. We will make Garut not only a dodol city, but also World of Fashion,” said MenKopUKM Teten Masduki in his remarks at the Garut Fashion Show, Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2023 entitled ‘Sagara From the East,’ at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

MenKopUKM emphasized that the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (KemenKopUKM) has big plans to develop a more advanced and up-to-date leather industry in Garut. Whereas leather manufacturing in Garut is roughly 100 years old, it is the same age as the world-famous brand, Gucci.

Indonesian leather raw materials are also of very high quality, as are the high-end products. We have a rich fabric heritage and many various cultures, and our designers have high standards and even have international recognition “Teten stated.

MenKopUKM appreciates the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs (APPMI) for collaborating with the Government of Garut and collaborating with well-known designer, Poppy Darsono, to initiate one of the biggest fashion events in the country, specifically involving local Garut fabric MSMEs.

According to him, 2023 will be the year for the development of all fashion potential in Indonesia, as well as encouraging the national creative industry in an effort to better the economy and the welfare of the people.

IFW’s presence gives hope to creative economy actors. Especially the fashion sector in distributing its best works. It is hoped that this will become a turning point for the progress and development of the Indonesian fashion sector,” he said.

According to the data from the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), the export value of Indonesian batik hit US$27.42 million (Rp.418.24 billion) in the first semester of 2022. The United States, Britain, Malaysia, Fiji, Thailand, Canada, Germany, Australia, Turkey, and Japan purchased the most Indonesian batik. This demonstrates the enormous potential of Indonesian fabrics in the foreign market.

Furthermore, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) free trade agreement has elevated Indonesia to the status of a major supplier of textile products to a number of countries. Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore are among them. As a result, it is anticipated that textile and fashion exports to these nations will increase.

Not only must we capitalize on this potential, but we must also become a factor for member countries and other RCEP partners who compete with the Indonesian textile industry. Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Cambodia are among them. As a result, Indonesia requires a strategy to increase exports of extremely competitive products.“said Teten.

APPMI’s collaboration with the Regional Government through the Dekranasda of Garut Regency, the Dekranasda of Batanghari Jambi Regency, East Kutai Regency by cooperating with local MSMEs is a good synergy in building the foundation of the Indonesian fashion industry.

Education and Training

At the same event, Garut Regent Rudy Gunawan stated that his party has been working with designer Poppy Darsono to develop the Garut leather industry in order to improve its quality for the past two years.

So it’s no surprise that Garut products were effectively displayed at the G20 Engagement Group’s W20 (Women20) event in Italy last year. “There are, indeed, some aspects that need to be improved so that Garut leather products can become more global,” he said.

As a result, his party, in collaboration with KemenKopUKM, will continue to provide education, training, and concrete advice to MSME actors. “Especially the support from the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (KemenKopUKM) which helps build shared houses with a budget of up to IDR 12 billion, assisted by professionals through the formation of the Cinta Karma Bela Cooperative,” said Rudy.

Similarly, Poppy Darsono, an APPMI member and designer, stated that the collaboration with Garut resulted in 24 fashion creations that were exhibited at the IFW 2023 event.

Around 300 leather artisans spread across Garut were trained and product development for leather crafts were provided by fashion experts from Florence, Italy, especially for leather handbags and shoes.

When I visited Garut from one shop to another, the products were monotonous and similar. As a result, I believe there is much room for improvement. Due to a lack of adequate space, a Common House will be built for artisans to join and establish a cooperative,” Poppy explained.
